2024 Year-End Reflection: A Journey of Growth and Gratitude
Today is the last day of 2024, and looking back, it was truly a year that transformed my life from many perspectives. In this year, I have studied extensively, traveled widely, gathered countless memories, experienced profound growth, and reaped numerous rewards. My heart is full of gratitude for this remarkable year, the special memories it brought, and the wonderful people who surrounded me.
This year taught me the value of persistence and adaptability. Through my MPhil studies, I pushed beyond my comfort zone, embracing new challenges and expanding my knowledge horizons. Each paper and book read, each course completed, and each skill learned became a building block in my personal academic development journey.
My travels this year opened my eyes to new perspectives and cultures. Since the pandemic has ended, I have had more time and opportunities to explore both my country and the world. Each destination wasn’t just a place on the map; it became a chapter in my story, filled with unexpected encounters, breathtaking moments, and valuable lessons. These journeys reminded me that the world is vast, yet connected through our shared human experiences.
2024 was also a year of meaningful connections. The gatherings with friends (especially my talented group of colleagues in the CUHK GPA 2023 cohort of PhD and MPhil students) and family, whether celebratory or casual, strengthened my appreciation for community. In a world that often feels digital and distant, these personal connections proved invaluable, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
The year brought its share of challenges, but each obstacle became an opportunity for growth. I learned that setbacks are not endpoints but stepping stones to success. Through perseverance and support from my network, I overcame hurdles that initially seemed insurmountable.
Academic achievements marked significant milestones this year. One co-authored paper was accepted by the prestigious Journal of Contemporary China (JCC) in December 2024, which was undoubtedly the best Christmas gift of the year. Additionally, another co-authored paper was accepted for the National Communication Association’s 2024 Convention. Furthermore, two more papers were accepted for the International Studies Association’s 2025 Convention in Chicago. Each project, paper, or assignment completed, goal reached, and recognition received validated the hard work and dedication invested. However, beyond the achievements themselves, I value the journey and the valuable lessons learned along the way.
As I stand at the threshold of a new year, I carry forward the wisdom gained from 2024. The year taught me that growth isn’t always linear, success isn’t always immediate, and the most precious moments often come unplanned. I’m grateful for the laughter shared, the challenges overcome, and the dreams realised.
To everyone who has been a part of my journey this year — family, friends, professors, mentors, and even brief acquaintances — I want to express my deepest gratitude for enriching my life and adding colour to my canvas of 2024. As this chapter draws to a close, I am filled with optimism and anticipation for the year ahead. I carry forward the invaluable lessons, cherished memories, and personal growth that I have gained from this transformative experience.
Here’s to the past year and the promising future that lies ahead. May we both have a prosperous new year in 2025, and I hope we can share our stories of that year together!
Cheers,
Frank Chen
